Studanka in the Square

29 Sep

Yes I am full aware that while most people have dull surroundings while making a jaunt to the grocery store, I do not. A walk through old town square is usually required of me on a daily basis. Studanka Praha was playing in the square on my way to Albert the other day. Although there are maybe one or two cons to not having a car while in the city- this certainly is not one of them!

Deadly Delivery: The Maternal Health Care Crisis in the USA

29 Sep

“It keeps startling me that at the beginning of this 21st century,

at a time when we can . . . explore the depths of the seas

and build an international space station, we have not been

able to make childbirth safe for all women around the world.

…  This is one of the greatest social causes of our time.”

Thoraya Obaid, Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund1

Please, it only takes a few minutes to learn the latest about The Maternal Health Care Crisis that is happening RIGHT NOW.

You can find the summary here.

Birth in the USA

29 Sep

Altho this is sad and i literally feel sick to my stomach every time i read the latest in maternity/ birth care in america- this makes me angry more than anything. Wake the F up America!!! Why are people not catching on to something that is so clear. If you are a parent to be- PLEASE educate yourself and make your self aware of the reality as well as your birth options. Need somewhere to start? Go here. This is where i started many years ago when i began educating myself (years later i was able to use the wonderful Cara as my own midwife).

Astronomical Tower Clock

19 Sep

Located in ‘Old Town Square’ this 600 year old clock is just around the corner from our home. I had seen this video online, and then this last weekend we saw it live. Blue kept clapping on and off through out the whole thing and even the dog couldn’t keep her eyes off of it.

5 things Im totally diggin’ on

19 Sep

{{One for each of my senses}} …nifty how that works huh?

1. Sight

These two prints greet me as I walk through the door each day. Can’t get enough of this chicks work!

2. Taste

Nothing is better than spun honey. If you disagree Im not sure we can continue being friends?

3. Smell

Okay now take that spun honey and wash your hair with it. This is what you get. I literally have to fix myself a croissant every time I get out of the shower.

4. Touch

Crocheted ballet slippers by FiveSisters on Etsy. I love not leaving the house just so I can wear these.

5. Hear

I really love how nervous everyone looks in the beginning of this video. It really shows how untouched and fresh these guys are which makes me like them more.

Museum of Communism

16 Sep

Last Sunday, the three of us spent a few hours at the museum of communism. There was alot of history scripted panels I had to skip with a squirmy little boy in tow, however I was captivated by all the objects that existed in such a dark time.

The museum was tucked away in a corner unit on the upstairs level of a super old building as you can imagine (or see). Such a beautiful place to house some of the countries most ugliest memories.

Well Hello.

Sleep = Fun (the way it should be)

16 Sep

You can bet your bottom dollar that when this baby boy is old enough to sleep in a big boy bed, he will have one that he will love to be in (and one i wouldn’t mind curling up with him in as well).

Here are a few beds that are at the top of my dream list:

1 Book Bed …Im thinking that with some some brainstorming and a few tools this can be a fun dyi.

Love this band. The video “Please Turn” is from a scene from the 1962 film “Vivre Sa Vie” (My Life to Live) with Anna Karina.

Birth in the USA

14 Sep

I found this on Blue’s birth doula’s blog (thats a mouthful). She’s an amazing photographer, childbirth educator and doula extraordinaire. We sure would have had a rough time achieving our healthy/natural/drug free birth plan without her thats for sure (and another story)!

These stats are interesting and also not surprising. I wonder what the statistics are here in the Czech Republic?

This is not your grandmother’s doily!

13 Sep

The doily has really been trying to make a comeback for sometime now as it’s one of those things people either love or hate. It’s been made fun of a lot and even transformed into some industrial ragged versions (which were never popular), but it’s just now that Ive noticed its really making it’s own new fresh debut. Which i think is fabu as im a total fan!

When I first think of doilies it’s almost like I can smell that old musty scent only a (but not all) grand mothers house can smell like. We all know what im talking about.  But if your like me, the sight of a doily also has that instant feel of warmth and love- a simple textured miniature throw that can soften just about anything.

I simply cant resist these uber-feminine flash backs.

1 ‘punk doily’ available at notonthehighstreet.com.

2 ‘romantic peach and vintage doily pillow’ by squirrelonaledgetop over at etsy.

3 ‘lace tea set’ was also found on notonthehighstreet.com. Real doilies were used to make these!

4 ‘lace lamp’ …Put those old doilies that you inherited from your grandmother to good use! Hit up here for easy diy instructions.

5 ‘square doily clock’ by uncommon. The doily makes a cool debut as a square AND lets you know that you are those five minutes late for work.

DIY: wooden veggies (so rad)

12 Sep

Who doesn’t like wooden toys and who doesn’t like play food?! What i dig about these is they’re plain and simple. And even cooler handmade. Too cool and too easy. I found the tutorials over at Duo Fiberworks.

For the video game nerds

8 Sep

Im totally inspired, motivated and obsessed with food (who isnt?). But food that resembles anything but it’s nutritional value- even better. With that said…who knew bento boxes could be so cool! If you grew up with video games from the 80’s on, you probably know the characters Donkey Kong, Zelda (my fav), Tamogatchi, etc.

All of these delish gems are made by this chick.

Childhood Doesn’t Wait

8 Sep

Ahem…and for a more serious tone. I found this posted on a cool blog about motherhood. Make sure to have a tissue handy!

Childhood Doesn’t Wait
(Author Unknown)

I was sitting on a bench
while in a nearby mall,
When I noticed a young mother
with two children who were small.

The youngest one was whining,
“Pick me up,” I heard him beg
but the mother’s face grew angry
as the child clung to her leg.

“Don’t hang on to me,” she shouted
as she pushed his hands away,
I wish I’d had the courage
to go up to her and say…

“The time will come too quickly
when those little arms that tug,
Won’t ask for you to hold them
or won’t freely give a hug.

“The day will sneak up subtly
just as it did with me,
When you can’t recall the last time
that your child sat on your knee.

“Like those sacred, pre-dawn feedings
when we cherished time alone
Our babies grow and leave behind
those special times we’ve known.

“So when your child comes to you
with a book that you can share,
Or asks that you would tuck him in
and help him say his prayer…

“When he comes to sit and chat
or would like to take a walk,
Before you answer that you can’t
`cause there’s no time to talk”
Remember what all parents learn
so many times too late,
That years go by too quickly
and that childhood doesn’t wait.

“Take every opportunity,
if one should slip away
Reach hard to get it back again,
don’t wait another day.”
I watched that mother walk away
her children followed near,
I hope she’ll pick them up
before her chances disappear.

Oh snap!
